Ms. Kern graduated from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2011 with a Juris Doctor Magna Cum Laude (with the highest honors). While in law school Ms. Kern had the privilege of working for Lakeshore Legal Aid representing clients from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in complex legal matters beginning in 2007.
In 2012, Ms. Kern help start a federal funded legal program at a local domestic violence shelter and was the staff attorney serving that program until she established her practice. The focus of this program was to provide legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse.
Prior to establishing the legal program, Ms. Kern was responsible for administering several federal grants, training community service providers such as local police and sheriff departments, Community Mental Health employees and many other community agencies in the aspects of elder abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.
Ms. Kern’s dedication to the community is remarkable. Ms. Kern created a pro bono panel of attorneys for St. Clair County with more than 45 members who offered free representation to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, elder abuse or those who did not qualify for legal aid services.
For individuals with little or no legal experience, legal documents, legal process and courtroom procedure can be very intimidating and overwhelming. Family Law:
In Michigan, all family law issues are handled at the circuit court level. Depending on the stage of your case, your matter may be heard by a referee at the Friend of the Court or a Judge at the circuit court. Michigan is a no-fault state with regard to the reason for filing of a divorce or legal separation action, fault may play a role in the determination of custody, parenting time and property settlement. Even after a divorce or legal separation case has been finalized, issues of custody, parenting time and child support may be modified upon showing proper cause or a change of circumstances.
